An employee in Turkey who works on a public holiday or during a religious festival receives, on top of normal pay, one extra day's pay for each holiday day worked; in practice people call it "double pay". The rule is article 47 of Labour Act No. 4857. Article 49 sets the daily rate: gross monthly pay divided by 30, or 7.5 times the hourly rate. Festival eves and the afternoon of 28 October count as half days. So a monthly-paid employee who works the whole of Kurban Bayramı 2027, eve afternoon included, 4.5 days, earns an extra 15.0% of monthly gross pay; for Ramazan Bayramı the figure is 11.7%. Working every public holiday of the year (14.5 days) adds roughly 0.5 months of gross pay. The amounts are gross, before income tax and social security. Working on a holiday at all depends on the contract or the employee's consent.
What the law says
Article 47 of the Labour Act separates two cases. An employee who does not work on a national or general holiday is paid in full for that day without doing any work. One who works instead receives an additional day's pay for each day worked. Working the holiday doubles the pay; staying home does not reduce it. Article 44 makes holiday work subject to the contract or the employee's consent. Under article 45, contracts cannot cut these rights, while more favourable terms in collective agreements are preserved; a collective agreement may pay holiday work more.
The daily rate under three pay methods
The only variable in the calculation is the daily rate, which article 49 defines by pay method. On a monthly salary, gross monthly pay is divided by 30. On an hourly rate, a day is 7.5 times the hourly rate. For piece work, lump-sum or percentage pay, the pay earned in the period is divided by the days worked in it. Article 50 leaves overtime, bonuses and social benefits out. The calculator handles the first two methods directly; for the third, enter your daily average times 30 as monthly pay.
Extra pay for each 2027 holiday
The table shows how many holiday days each period has in the 2027 calendar and what share of monthly gross pay it represents for a salaried employee. 19 May is also the fourth day of Kurban Bayramı, so it is paid once, not twice.
| Period | Holiday days | Share of monthly pay |
|---|---|---|
| New Year's Day | 1 | 3.3% |
| Eid al-Fitr incl. eve | 3.5 | 11.7% |
| 23 April | 1 | 3.3% |
| 1 May | 1 | 3.3% |
| Eid al-Adha incl. eve, with 19 May | 4.5 | 15.0% |
| 15 July | 1 | 3.3% |
| 30 August | 1 | 3.3% |
| 28 Oct afternoon and 29 Oct | 1.5 | 5.0% |

Eves and 28 October: paying the half day
Law No. 2429 starts the holiday at 1 pm on festival eves and on 28 October. Working that afternoon therefore earns half a day extra; the morning is ordinary working time. In 2027 the Eid al-Fitr eve falls on a Monday, the Eid al-Adha eve on a Saturday and 28 October on a Thursday. Republic Day has its own rules, explained on is 28 October a half day.
Gross, net and who is covered
The calculator's figure is gross: after deductions such as income tax and social security the net amount on the payslip is lower. The calculation applies to employees under the Labour Act; civil servants come under Law No. 657 and their holiday duty follows their own rules. If you would rather plan time off, the annual leave calculator and the holiday length calculator will help.
