The fast is broken at iftar, when the maghrib time begins and the evening call to prayer is made. Under the Diyanet's rule, maghrib starts 7 minutes after the upper edge of the sun disappears below the horizon; those 7 minutes are a safety margin called temkin. On the first day of Ramadan 2027, Mon 8 February, iftar in Istanbul is computed at 18:36, and on the last day, Mon 8 March, at 19:09. That first day the earliest iftar is in Iğdır at 17:37 and the latest in Izmir at 18:48; the 71 minutes between them come from the country's east-west width under a single time zone. Over the year, maghrib in Istanbul is earliest on Fri 3 December at 17:43 and latest on Mon 21 June at 20:47. During Ramadan 2027, at the end of winter, iftar moves a little over a minute later each day. Times are computed for the 81 provincial centres and differ from the official Diyanet calendar by one minute at most; for worship the official calendar prevails.
Ramadan 2027: iftar in ten large provinces

The order holds in mid-month too: on 22 February 2027 the earliest iftar is in Iğdır at 17:54, the latest in Çanakkale at 19:04. For the other 71 provinces and every day, see the 2027 Ramadan timetable.
The 7 minutes between sunset and iftar
The sunset time in a weather app is not the iftar time. On 8 February 2027, for instance, the sun sets in Istanbul around 18:29, while the evening call to prayer comes at 18:36. The Diyanet adds 7 minutes to be sure the sun has set across the western and higher parts of the city as well. Breaking the fast at the weather-app sunset therefore means breaking it a few minutes early.
Maghrib in Istanbul month by month
Ramadan moves about eleven days earlier each year, so iftar times will shift in the coming years. The table shows the maghrib time on the 15th of each month of 2027 for Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir; the row for the month in which Ramadan falls shows how long the fasting day will be. Today, 28 October 2026, maghrib in Istanbul is at 18:13.

Is iftar in a district the same as in the provincial centre?
No. According to the Diyanet's comparison of prayer times, times move about four minutes earlier for each degree of longitude eastwards. In wide provinces an eastern and a western district can differ by several minutes. Latitude matters too: in winter the sun sets slightly earlier further north. For the exact time in your district, check the Diyanet's official prayer times. A live countdown is on how long until iftar, and the end of sahur on imsak time.
